Exposure to Toxic Environmental Agents

چکیده
critical area of intervention for obstetricians, gynecologists, and other reproductive health care professionals. Patient exposure to toxic environmental chemicals and other stressors is ubiquitous, and preconception and prenatal exposure to toxic environmental agents can have a profound and lasting effect on reproductive health across the life course. Although exposure to toxic environmental chemicals is universal, harmful environmental exposure is inequitably and unequally distributed, which leaves some populations, including underserved women, more vulnerable to adverse reproductive health effects than other populations. Because individuals alone can do little about exposure to toxic environmental agents, the authoritative voice of health care professionals in policy arenas is critical to translating emerging scientific findings into prevention-oriented action on a large scale. The evidence that links exposure to toxic environmental agents and adverse reproductive and developmental health outcomes is sufficiently robust, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the College) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) join leading scientists and other clinical practitioners in calling for timely action to identify and reduce exposure to toxic environmental agents while addressing the consequences of such exposure.

Toxicology of environmental agents: a blend of applied and basic research.
The purpose of this paper is to present some of the more carefully studied aspects of the preclinical toxicology of antineo-plastic agents, and apply these findings (with certain obvious cautions) to the area of environmental toxicology. Most of the studies to be described here are the result of applied toxicologic studies performed in support of the clinical introduction of new chemicals in th...

Most environmental exposures involve concurrent or sequential exposure to multiple chemicals in air, water, and food. Interactive effects in carcinogenesis have been described for certain combinations of agents. They are described in terms of enhancement or inhibition of carcinogenesis. Enhancement effects have been documented for cigarette smoking in combination with exposure to asbestos, rado...

Although pathogens are known to modify the effects of toxicants, U.S. environmental health research currently focuses on physical agents and chemical toxicants—a focus that limits the field by ignoring the interaction between pathogens and toxic agents [EHP 118(8):1165–1172; Feingold et al.]. These authors present a conceptual paradigm that integrates infectious disease and toxicologic environm...

Introduction: Organophosphorous (OP) chemical warfare nerve agents are similar to OP pesticides in their structure and toxic mechanisms.. These agents mainly sarin and tabun were used during Iran-Iraq war with high mortalities. Sarin was also used as chemical terrorism in Matsomoto and Tokyo metro in 1994 and 1995, respectively with high morbidity and mortality. Since these lethal agents are st...
